Most of us use the same apps most of the time: checking what’s new on Facebook (Facebook) , making sure no new emails have arrived, and occasionally also twittering on Twitter (Twitter) to get a little upset about something someone tweeted.
These apps may only show what has been renewed in our torch but behind the scenes they require many resources. They periodically operate the GPS sensor and check where we are, requiring the device to perform processing operations that will display a more live interface and upload and download different data to their servers and all to give us a better user experience.
But it’s important to remember that not all smartphone users in the world own the most powerful devices on the market, and in many countries the infrastructure is underdeveloped to provide inflated or fast browsing packages to cellular customers. Just for them, the keys offer lite versions of the apps we all know. With these apps you can make the main use for which they are intended, while the secondary features are often absent.
And why is it good for us, in Israel? If you have purchased a cheap device that does not boast of large working memory or rich storage – you will do well if you run into it and install Lite apps. In addition, all device owners will notice that thin apps consume much less battery than their sisters – the full versions.
The skinny versions are popular in Israel
In many apps, Lite users have to compromise on different features, but Facebook seems to have made efforts to include as many features as the original app and light, so we found it difficult to find a feature that exists in the original app and doesn’t exist in the lean app. However, one of the most noticeable differences is the UI, with the Lite app being very basic, devoid of unnecessary animations and gestures and reminiscent of what Facebook looked like at the beginning.
While in some countries the app is also available for Apple devices, in Israel it can only be downloaded to Android devices, where it weighs only 1.5 MB, depending on the device.
Facebook’s instant messaging app also has a lean version, but it is different compared to the full version. The lite version cannot respond to a specific message sent during the call. Instead, the conversation will be conducted normally and messages from both parties will be presented chronologically.
In the regular app, the home screen shows who is currently connected and also includes an area where your favorite friends will be shown – only the latest conversations will appear in the Lite app. Also, members cannot be added by QR code or phone numbers.
Messenger Light is also available in some countries for Apple devices, in Israel it can only be downloaded to Android devices, where it weighs less than 10 MB, depending on the device.
Even before the era of smartphones, Opera developers understood how graphics-intensive websites are accessible even for slow-connected devices. The company’s compression technology has become a hallmark, and to this day it provides a resource-efficient browser that will work great even if your phone is not the last shout in the market. Also saves traffic. Lightweight too.
Opera Mini is available for both Apple and Android devices.
Files at Google
This file explorer, which is only available for Android devices, is also added to the Lite apps list because its installation file is smaller than 10 MB, which is important in itself for weak devices. Weak.
The app scans all the files on the phone, and through a unique algorithm it manages to identify the files that can be deleted and concentrates its recommendations for the user in one place. This way, you can find duplicate files, files sent through instant messaging software and more. In addition, the app allows you to back up files in the cloud as well as share files with friends near you using encrypted Wi-Fi standard.
Twitter’s interface has always been very simple, which helps the skinny app look similar to the original app. Anyone interested can also enable Data Saver mode, a feature that automatically prevents photos and videos from downloading to your device.
You will not find the Dark Screen mode in this app, and you will have to give up the application by pulling or swiping gestures. In other features, the experience of use is similar.
Twitter Lite is only available for Android devices, even in Israel, and weighs less than 3 MB.
Microsoft has created Skype Lite for India, where millions of users are trying to communicate with each other over slow cellular networks. Most of Skype Lite’s features are identical to those of the original Skype, and the Data Saver can be enabled to indicate that the browsing package is being used at any time. The app also includes an interface that will allow you to receive and send SMS messages in addition to what is present on the device.
The beta of the app is available for download worldwide through the Google Play Store.
The Lite Across the Sea
Instagram, Tinder, Spotify and Shazam have already introduced intriguing versions of Lite, but these are not available to users in Israel. Developing companies are making great efforts to gain market share in developing countries as well, which is why they are launching Lite apps where they need it. In more developed countries they prefer to offer only the full versions.
The slim android
There are also basic and intermediate devices on the market for which the entire operating system has been adapted and known as Android Go. These devices have access to the Google Play Store, Google Play, but there will only be apps that can work with these basic devices. That’s why a whole series of Google Go: YouTube apps can be found in a version that lets you download videos on your device and set the downloadable volume to download. Easy-to-use and no-change version of Gmail compared to the full version, a light version of Google Maps and more. As mentioned, the apps are available for devices running Android Go, but also for some Android devices.
Who needs apps?
Another worthy alternative to apps we all know are Progressive Web Apps, or in short – PWA. These are applications that are stored on the server and run without the need to install them on the device. The technology has improved many applications of this type and in some cases it is difficult to identify at all that it is PWA and not a regular app.
An amiable initiative has gathered many PWA apps under one roof and is a manufacturer of this kind of app store. In Appscope you can find easy versions of Instagram, Google Maps, Uber and many other well-known apps. None of these will require you to install it on your device before use.
